Photo Galleries

Although my principal work is as an environmental historian, leading me to see the world always in terms of past places and people and creatures and landscapes that have left their traces on everything around us, I have also been a photographer ever since I was about twelve years old, so I habitually also see these things as if through a camera's lens. I have always written and taught with pictures in mind, and very much need to visit and wander in the places about which I write.

In these galleries, I offer collections of favorite images that express the convergence of my interests in place, time, ideas, and values.

Apostle Islands Aerial Photos I've long loved the view of the world from the air, and generally seize the opportunity to fly over landscapes I care about whenever I can, especially in a small plane with a pilot who's sympathetic to the needs of aerial photographers. In July, 2008, Jim Feldman and I flew over the Apostle Islands in search of photographs to illustrate a book he's writing, and some of the best results can be seen here.
